Chapter 8. DESMURGY. TRANSPORT IMMOBILISATION

Desmurgy (Greek desmos leash, connection + ergon case, execution) - the study of bandaging (dressing) and ways of their application.

The medical dressing is the means of preventive or therapeutic effect on the organism or its part using various materials and substances by holding them on the damaged part of the body.

The process of dressing application to the wound and previous medical procedures are referred to as "bandaging".

8.1. Classification of dressings

 According to the type of dressing material:

 fabric dressings;

 non-woven dressings;

 plaster bandages;

 splintage;

 special dressings.

 According to the intended purpose:

 preventive - prevention of callosity, sprains;

 protective (aseptic) - prevention of secondary infection;

 medicinal - providing drug exposure on tissues;

 hemostatic (compressing) - arrest bleeding;

 immobilising dressing - immobilisation of the damaged part of the body;

 dressing with traction - traction of bone fragments;

 corrective dressing - removal of deformations;

 occlusive dressing - sealing the wound (in open or valve pneumothorax).

 According to the method of dressing fixation:

 bandage dressings - circular, spiral, spica, figure-of-eight (cross), turtle, spiral reverse, Desault's bandage, head bandages, etc.;

• bandage-free dressings (adhesive tape, cravat, sling (four-tailed), T-shaped, contoured, cast padding (plaster). Bandage dressings are the most convenient and universal. They are firmly holding and evenly press on the body tissue.
