PREFACE

This textbook is written in accordance with the current official syllabus and reflects the principle content of the subject matter for "Surgical Diseases" courses for senior students of General Medicine departments. The book uses the materials of previously published textbooks such as "Clinical Lectures on Abdominal Surgery" and "Selected Lectures on Clinical Surgery". These publications underwent comprehensive evaluation and received recognition by not only students, but also interns, clinical residents and aspiring surgeons.

The content of previous editions was reviewed and significantly updated by the authors to reflect the latest research data relevant to the subject and trends in practical surgery.

The textbook is presented in two volumes. The authors, professors of Siberian State Medical University and Tomsk Institute of Military Medicine, elaborate on the main sections of the Specialized Surgery course as well as systematize and summarize a huge amount of information in order to present it in accordance with the syllabus for the subject of Surgical Diseases at General Medicine departments. To accomplish this goal, the authors rely on the latest advances in Russian and overseas surgery as well as their 35-year experience in teaching students and treating patients with various types of surgical diseases.

The book describes in detail the etiopathogenesis and modern paraclinical methods of diagnosis (laboratory, morphological, radiation, endoscopic methods) of surgical diseases, and presents a modern classification of clinical manifestations of surgical diseases with respect to patients' age.

Much attention is given to justifying indications for a surgery and describing approaches to the adequate choice of a surgery type as well as advantages of a method of particular anesthesia with regard to surgical and anesthetic risks. The book highlights the issues of prevention and treatment of possible intraand post-operative complications and describes outcomes of their treatment.
