Preface

Since the previous edition of the textbook on "Internal Diseases" was published, a lot of events have occurred in Russian and world medicine and influenced the decision to update it. What is the most important the medical science has been enriched with new unique facts that have significantly changed the real clinical practice both in diagnostics and treatment of medical diseases, but at the same time has suffered irreparable losses: the first authors of the textbook, members of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valentin Sergeyevich Moiseyev and Nikolay Alekseyevich Mukhin, have passed away. Their students and successors - corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences J.D. Kobalava and Professor S.V. Moiseev actively participated in this new edition as new editors led by Academician Anatoly Ivanovich Martynov. Preserving traditions of the Russian therapeutic school and paying tribute to them, the content of the book was updated in the light of recent major international clinical trials and actual recommendations of professional communities of cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, rheumatologists, etc. Most sections were written by leading experts, members of the Russian Scientific Medical Society of Therapists. Many new authors were involved in the work, including representatives of the younger generation of lecturing clinicians. In the new version, the authors tried to follow the principles originally laid down by its founders: providing students and residents with structured basic knowledge that allows them to quickly master the basics of medical art, see a particular patient behind his symptoms and syndromes, adapt and improve the efficiency of work with patients, and comprehend the most important practical aspects of diagnosing and treating diseases of internal organs.

We hope that the textbook will be useful not only for students and residents, but also for clinicians and lecturers of different specialties in their routine activities as a source of basic multidisciplinary professional information and will eventually strengthen their commitment to medical care.
