Chapter 16. REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND FAMILY PLANNING

16.1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Normal functioning of the reproductive system is an indicator of woman's health. Only a healthy woman can give birth to a healthy child, and only a healthy child can grow to become a healthy parent.

Human reproductive function is associated with private life of people whose nature is determined both by congenital features of an individual, and their acquired features. The reproductive system develops under the impact of national, cultural and religious traditions, as well as socioeconomic factors. These are the factors that determine sexual relations; the latter have undergone an evolution as long and complex as the humanity itself. The essence of sexual relations is preserving the population thus providing for continuity of human existence as a biological species.

Giving birth to healthy offspring and maintaining female reproductive health are issues well outside the sphere of medicine; they are rather social problems that need to be addresses at the national level.
